History

In the late seventies, to bring in much needed finances to Auroville, several young pioneers launched what was then known as Encens d’Auroville, with a single line of incense packets of just twelve fragrances. Several years later, Paul Pinthon, one of the co-founders, was joined by his partner Laura Reddy. They then started building a company which would offer a total range of home fragrances with a recognizable brand image. Thus their first act was to change the company name to MAROMA, while retaining Encens d’Auroville as the flagship incense line.

The Name
Ma-from Mother, Aroma-the fragrance, Om-the universal sound, and finally back again to Ma-mother. These words within a single name were meant to give a new impetus to this unit which aspires to make beautiful and fine quality products that have become emissaries of Auroville throughout the world.

The Product Line
Encens d’Auroville was our first product line of incense, hand rolled in 12 fragrances. The fragrances were steadily increased to 60. In addition many new fragrance based products were created. Hand poured candles are a strong product line. Maroma Spa, the Aromatherapy line was created with incense and candles and extended with the addition of Body Care products including soaps, shampoos, massage oils and others. Colibri, an all-natural insect and moth deterrent in several forms of application, is one of Maroma’s strongest lines. The traditional Encens d’Auroville line of incense packed in handmade paper now includes additional products such as sachets and cones and is distributed worldwide along with many of Maroma’s other products.

Quality

All our product lines are developed to create a feeling of well being and inner balance. Maroma’s fragrances conform to the guidelines set by the International Fragrance Association situated in Brussels. Our products are completely non-toxic and no tests are carried out on animals. Candles made by hand with imported cotton wicks and international standard colors as well as high grade paraffin wax and palm wax from sustainable sources are all part of an ever growing unit. Incense is hand rolled on bamboo sticks and the use of handmade paper packets in our signature line Encens d’Auroville, gave us a unique packaging that does not deplete the forests and is recyclable.

Maroma with its head office in Auroville India and branch office in Miami, is especially sensitive to environmental issues and we are dedicated to reduce our global foot prints. The ingredients used in the fabrication of our products are recyclable and abundantly present in nature or taken from renewable resources. We control and recycle our waste and for our packaging we always choose materials with minimal impact on the environment.

Maroma body care products are evolving replacing synthetic raw materials with natural ingredients whenever possible, including natural preservatives and natural colors.

Fair Trade
Since its inception the motto of Maroma has been to put people before machines, hence our work environment reflects this maxim. We are members of Fair Trade Forum India (FTFI) and follow the Fair Trade policy for all those involved with the company taking care of the cleanliness and safety of the work space to the well being of the workers. It has always run its business with consciousness and integrity to produce not only a beautiful product but to produce it in an environment conductive to creativity for all those involved in the company.

On the social front, priority to employing women from the local villages with a minimum age of 18 years and an education level of 12th standard encourages families to leave their daughters in school longer. Health care schemes, both government as well as additional health insurance, remain a norm for Maroma. The employees work in clean, well-ventilated and spacious work areas. Staff is encouraged to progress upwards from their designated positions. We have instances of gardeners becoming section supervisors, or lady typists becoming Managers and taking various sections of Administration in charge, such as export documentation and product sourcing.
